In 4th grade a friend gave me a copy of Metroid for the original Nintendo in exchange for my copy of Tiger Beat Magazine with Paula Abdul on the cover. While incomprehensible in hindsight, this was a real trade and considered fair because long before hormones kicked in Paula was deemed good music in our elementary school culture.
Punk bands can often take pop songs and make pretty great covers of them. While not taking them too seriously, these groups turn up the tempo and energy. Halifax does a great job with this Abdul classic.
